What to Expect

We'll visit 3 popular tourist spots in Shimizu Ward of Shizuoka City. First we’ll visit the Kuno Toshogu Shrine via a ropeway from Nippondaira Hill. This shrine was built by the second shogun, Hidetada Tokugawa, to commemorate his father, Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1869).The buildings are covered with beautiful elaborate carvings and sculptures that were designated as a national treasure in 2012. Next we’ll move to the observatory deck on the hill. From here you can look over Shimizu Seaport, Suruga Bay and Izu Peninsula. It’s a perfect time to take photographs of the magnificent Mt. Fuji with green tea fields and mandarin orange orchards in the foreground. Our final destination is Miho-no-Matsubara, where more than 30,000 pine trees extend about 7km along the seashore. I’ll tell you the famous legend “Hagoromo Story” at this pine grove. Let’s go and explore these historic places; you can take lots of nice pictures!

Mount Fuji Day Tour

We were glad to view the magnificent Mt. Fuji on a bright sunny day with our wonderful tour guide Ms Setsuko. She is knowledgeable in the history of each of the listed attractions (e.g. Lake Tanuki & Shiraito Waterfall) and accommodating in our requests. She even brought us some delicious snacks and taught us some basic Japanese origami and language. We would highly recommend her if you are looking for a tour guide around Mt. Fuji area.

Thank you so much for your nice review, Melinda. We were very lucky to see spectacular Mt. Fuji on a beautiful day. I was glad you showed much interest in tea leaf picking and tasting green tea in the tea farm. I suppose all of you are enjoying green tea at home. Since you bought 2 varieties, I'll send you the recipi later on how to make tasty tea and effectively get components. Say hello to you mother and father.

Great tour in Shimuzu

Setsuko was waiting at the cruise pier for our group of 6. We went to the water falls, shrine/temple and a Sake brewery. The weather did not cooperate for a site of Mt. Fuji however she emailed me photos she had taken on previous trips. Great information and also taught us origami. Highly recommend her! She also arranged the transport for our group.

Setsuko H.

Dear Julie, I was very glad that all of you showed much interest in our culture. In the Takasago Brewery which uses ground water from Mt. Fuji, you enjoyed tasting Japanese traditional rice wine, sake and were pleased with its aroma and flavour. Hopefully you will enjoy it with your family and friends when you go back to your country. Please have fun during the rest days of crusing trip.

Enjoyed Our Tour

We had a very enjoyable tour with Setsuko. She customized the tour to suit our personal interests and gave us a detailed itinerary prior to the tour. She arrived on time and met us beside the ship. We traveled by city bus to the Mino Pine Groves and the nearby shrine and beach. Then we went to the Marine Science Museum where we watched demonstrations of the mechanical fish they are using to study how fish swim. Finally we crossed the bay in a water ferry, spent a few minutes inside the fish market, and arrived back at our ship on time. Unfortunately, Mt. Fuji was not visible because of the rain. Setsuko speaks good English and is very knowledgeable about the religious customs at the shrines. She had prepared several small gifts for us - postcards, pins, and some origami birds. Although at times she walked a bit too quickly for us (we are seniors), it was clear that she had prepared very thoroughly for the tour and did everything to make it a good day for us. All in all, we were very pleased with the tour.

Hello Patricia, I'm very happy to know both of you enjoyed visiting the Miho Pine Groves, the shrine dedicated to the local god and marine musuem on a rainy day.I also had great time together feedng bread to seagulls from the water bus.I'm sorry to have rushed you sometimes because I wanted to show you many places in a limited time. Since you couldn't meet Mt. Fuji, I'll send you some photos I took from our hometown Shizuoka and on the 5th station this summer. Hopefully you'll find its beauty and charms. Thank you for sharing wonderful time with me.

Outstanding guide

Setsuko was one of the best tour guides we had during our vacation to Japan. Her English was very good and was very passionate in describing the many places we visited and gave a real personal touch. Everything was well organized before our tour where she explained thoroughly what we could see and the costs. Setsuko provided us with many other pieces of information about what we were to see which was very informative. I would definitely recommend Setsuko as guide for your next tour.

Setsuko H.

Dear Brian, I appreciate your review which is an honor greater than I deserve. We talked how to improve the tour more exciting and efficient so that we could realize a memorable tour, I believe. I was very happy to share our daily transportation with you. I hope all of you enjoyed Miho Pine Groves and a Japanese garden where authentic green tea Shizuoka is very proud of was served. Again thank you very much for your effort to organize this great tour with me.
