Relaxing koto experience

Getting to play the koto has been a definite highlight of our stay in Kyoto. No past experience is needed and Harumi makes it easy and fun. Harumi is clearly a highly accomplished koto musician. We walked away feeling great and having the lesson in a traditional house over 100 years old is another perk! Highly recommend!

What an incredible experience! Harumi is a very talented, patient and delightful teacher who took the time with us to teach 2 songs. We felt very welcome. 5 star+ experience.

Wonderful experience

A great experience for anyone with any interest in koto, japanese music, or music of any kind. The teacher and her daughter were very friendly, good at teaching, and spoke English quite well. We were first taught the basic form and details about the koto, followed by learning 2 songs. After some practice, the teacher plays a duet with you and you get several tries. After the allotted time, I asked the teacher for a performance and she was happy to oblige. She played a wonderful advanced version of the first song we were taught. She also spent some time afterwards explaining some of the history of her family and Soushunan, and we had a nice conversation while having tea and snacks. I was able to book the session through this website only a day in advance with no difficulty. If I'm ever in Kyoto again I will try to come back to learn some more difficult pieces.
