Dreaming of seeing the never-ending fields of tulips in the Netherlands, but not sure when the best time is to see them? Then this article is for you! I will provide you with the most important information you need to know before planning your trip to the Netherlands, and how to get the most out of your time in this beautiful flower country.

In this article, you will find how and when you can enjoy the tulip fields, tips on other ways to enjoy tulips in the Netherlands and around Amsterdam, and what benefits you get by hiring a Netherlands tour guide to show you around.

Tulip Fields, Netherlands

Most of the tulip farms in the Netherlands are in the Noordoostpolder in the province of Flevoland, where large parts of the land are covered in flower fields. Other fields are located along the coast from The Hague up to Alkmaar in the northern parts of the country, and a great place to see the tulip fields can be found in the flower region of Bollenstreek. The town of Lisse where the famous gardens of Keukenhof are located is also famous for its tulip fields, so when visiting remember to hop on a bike and cycle around the area.

Amsterdam is also a great place to experience the season of tulips, and I will tell you more about it later in the article. Most of the farms are not open for visitors, but there is the Tulip Farm De Tulperij in Voorhout which you can visit during tulip season in Amsterdam. If you want to visit other farms, be sure to ask permission from the farmers first!

Keukenhof Gardens

Wondering where else could you go see the tulips in the Netherlands? Then you should visit Keukenhof, the most famous flower park in the Netherlands, situated within half an hour from popular destinations such as Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Leiden. 7 million flower bulbs are planted in the garden every year, and it has a wonderful collection of other flowers such as orchids, hyacinths, irises, roses and many more. The park has a different theme every year, so even if you visit it every year it will not be the same.

Amsterdam Tulip Festival

During the tulip season several traditional events are held and if you are staying in Amsterdam here are a few that you can experience:

  • The most famous one is the Flower Parade Bollenstreek (also known as the Keukenhof Flower Parade and Bloemencorco Bollenstreek). The parade rides a 40km long route from Noordwijk to Haarlem in one day.
  • If you are visiting Amsterdam in January, participate in National Tulip Day held every third Saturday, in which the tulip growers present their flowers in a temporary garden on Dam Square.
  • Take part in the Tulp Festival Amsterdam, in which tulips are displayed in more than 40 different locations in Amsterdam.
  • Visit the floating flower market on Singel, Bloemenmarkt, where you can buy tulip bulbs from the vendors.

The Best Season To See Tulips

The Netherlands is very famous for its tulips, and the tulip season is seen as the start of the spring. The climate and soil of the Netherlands make it the perfect country to grow tulips and during mid-March to mid-May, you can see the country turn into a gorgeous array of colors when the tulip fields start to grow. The best time to see tulip season in the Netherlands is in April, when the tulips are in their full bloom. But to be sure that you will have the best experience, you will need to pay attention to the weather conditions, which is why the tulip forecasts come in handy, you can find them on the internet through a Tulip Flower Forecast. The next question of course is where, and how can you enjoy this season to its best? Read ahead and I will tell you!

No matter which season you are visiting, there are also several other flowers blooming during other seasons:

  • Snowhites and Crocus from February to March
  • Daffodils from March to April
  • Hyacinths from the end of May to April
  • Tulips from mid-March to mid-May
  • Dahlias from mid-August to mid-October
