My name is Rodrigo Coelho, I'm a game designer who lives in Tokyo and I have been entitled by a tour company with one mission: To find the best tourist spots in Tokyo to catch Pokémon and create the best Pokémon Go walking tour in Tokyo!
Rules I used to choose the best tour route for sightseeing and Pokémon catching in Tokyo.
- Each place has to be one of the main attractions of Tokyo;
- All places have to be beautiful, cultural, famous and not far from each other;
- The entire tour must be have varied environments in which you can have a higher chance of finding different types of Pokémon (having sacred areas, heavy city, bodies of water nearby and heavy nature);
- All places must have many PokéStops, gyms and be popular places that people use to install Pokémon Lures;
- All places must be great for taking pictures with the Pokémon you find!
So these were the rules. Are you ready? Then lets get to the chosen route!
Pokémon Go Walking Tour in Tokyo - Best Tourist Spots in Tokyo to Catch Pokémon
Whether you are visiting Tokyo and want to catch Pokémon, or you just want to visit some of the best spots in the city and are with friends or children who are playing Pokémon Go, this is the route for you:
1- Asakusa 
We start in Asakusa, which is visited by more than half of the overseas tourists. Here you will encounter Tokyo’s oldest temple Sensoji Temple as well as the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), which is the outermost gate of Sensoji Temple as well as the street lined with old-school shops that lead to the inner precincts of the shrine. Many of the stores here offer services in English and you can also get your omikuji in English at the Sensoji Temple temple. Omikuji is a small piece of paper on which one's fortune is written and can be found in many temples and shrines.
PokéReason: Besides being a sacred area, which helps you find rare Pokémon, Asakusa is filled with PokéStops and Lures. It has also one of the most competitive Pokémon gyms in Tokyo, the Kaminarimon gym. Its also near a river which helps you find water-type Pokémon.
What Pokémon can you find in Asakusa? Some of the pokémon you can find are: Blastoise, Sandshrew, Machop, Shellder, Bellsprout.
2- Akihabara
After asakusa, we depart to Akihabara, which is continuously abuzz with tourists from all over the world. Akihabara is a pop culture mecca representing anime and manga and is popular as a tourist sightseeing spot largely due to the concentration of stores specializing in Japanese electronics.
PokéReason: Akihabara has one of the largest concentrations of Pokémon Go players in Tokyo, here you can make new friends that are also playing, compete in Pokémon Gyms and grab many items in the dozens of PokéStops along the way. And if you see a large amount of people running to one area, well.. You know where to go to find that rare Pokémon you were looking for!
What Pokémon can you find in Akihabara? Some of the pokémon you can find are: Spearow, Dragonair, Nidorina, Nidorino, Porygon.
3- Shibuya 
Upon leaving Akihabara we head to Shibuya, the youth mecca Shibuya of Tokyo, which features the famous scramble intersection world’s busiest intersection, with 500,000 people crossing it daily. Besides the shopping and cuisine, you can enjoy the unique atmosphere of this neighborhood.
PokéReason: Shibuya is the place to find those Pokémon that like to hang around big city spaces and places filled with people! With so many famous landmarks around a small area, you are sure to find tons of PokéStops here to stock-up on your items. Lures around the Hachiko Statue is also very popular in this area.
What Pokémon can you find in Shibuya? Some of the pokémon you can find are: Jigglypuff, Koffing, Grimer, Electabuzz, Tangela.
4- Meiji Jingu Shrine 
Finally, we finish our Pokémon Go Walking Tour in Tokyo in one of the most famous shrines in Tokyo, the Meiji Jingu Shrine. Located in the Shibuya district in Tokyo and near Harajuku Station and Yoyogi Park, this shrine attracts the greatest number of visitors from throughout Japan for hatsumode or the first shrine visit of the New Year. If you happen to be lucky enough on the day of your visit, you could catch a glimpse of a traditional wedding ceremony.
PokéReason: The Meiji Jingu Shrine is located in a forest that covers an area of 70 hectares (170 acres). Here you will find Pokémon who likes to live in dense natural areas. And being a sacred place, chances are that you will find some rare Pokémon too! This place is also great for taking Pokémon pictures and has its good share of PokéStops.
What Pokémon can you find in Meiji Jingu Shrine? Some of the pokémon you can find are: Clefable, Mankey, Ekans, Drowzee, Exeggcute.
Tips for Taking Pictures in Pokémon Go
1-Turn off the AR and turn on again for positioning. Pokémon are not always where you want them to be, if you find that they are not right in front of the temple for example, you can turn off the AR, position your smartphone in the direction you need, then turn on the AR again and the Pokémon will be there.
2-Wait for the jumping animation. Pokémon tend to be always on the floor and because of that, it could be difficult to have both the Pokémon and the landmark in the same frame, specially if you are trying to take a horizontal picture. Luckily, almost all Pokémon have a jumping animation that puts them mostly in the middle of your screen, so all you have to do is wait for the jump and take the picture at the right time!.
